Macbook optical drive issue

So, my girlfriend has brought to my attention the fact that her macbook's optical drive will attempt to eject despite the lack of any optical media being present. I've dug around a little bit on it at this point and it seems to differ from the majority of other cases involving this problem. Most other people report that is happens only when the machine is sleeping, whereas in this case, it only happens while the machine is awake. It happens at random intervals (as frequently as 20 or 30 seconds apart and as long as 30 minutes between occurrences) and I've tried the basics (zapping the PRAM, pulling the battery and holding the power button for 5 seconds) and nothing seems to work. I have yet to find any fixes and it's starting to drive me batshit. This machine is no longer under warranty, so sending it to Apple isn't really an option for me at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
