When has installing more applications ever sped up a computer? Her iMac is old. It still makes a great email/wordprocessor, if she wants to do more than that, it's time to upgrade.
I am seriously starting to think you are some 40-something year old troll who likes to aggravate people with ridiculous posts.
Take 10 seconds to google something first. Or here's an idea, ask your friend to click "about my mac" to get the OS version.
One final comment: Use the shift key. It is your friend. (It's the one directly to the left of "z" and right of "/".
